CATAMARANS

Catamarans have now proved to be the obvious choice for long distance live-aboard cruising. The catamaran offers many design advantages and we invite you to consider the following.
Safety
Without a heavy keel, a cruising catamaran is virtually unsinkable, even if flooded. Well built catamarans such as the Inspiration 1050 have watertight bulkheads and foam filled spaces or buoyancy tanks, these give real security in the event of a collision. In bad weather the stability of a well constructed cruising catamaran also makes it more comfortable. In breaking seas, a catamaran will slide sideways while monohulls tend to pivot on the keel, developing a heavy rolling motion which could jeopardize the mast.
Twin engines and rudders add to the overall safety of the vessel.

Space and comfort
The cruising catamaran has much more space than the equivalent monohull. The bridgedeck is bright, light and airy, and affords panoramic views while seated. Galleys are large and easily worked, and both owners and guests cabins are more separated and enjoy greater privacy.
There is also  much more deck space making it easier for sail handling, and to relax.
Performance
Most modern catamarans are faster than equivalent monohulls, especially downwind. This reduces passage times, and extends the cruising range. Additionally, a catamaran's twin hulls track in a straight line, and are easier to steer by hand or autopilot.
Stability
The cruising catamaran is very stable, healing less than 5 degrees. This makes cooking, sleeping, and navigation easier, and working on the deck safer. The lack of a ballasted keel means that there is no heavy pendulum under the boat amplifying the rolling motion. This is an advantage when underway or at anchor.
Shoal Draught
New cruising grounds are opened up by minimal draught, which also allows better shelter, and often more comfortable and less crowded anchorages.
Most catamarans will happily take the ground, and will, of course dry out level. This advantage not only reduces the cost of mooring, but  allows easy slipping for antifouling and servicing anodes, propellers and transducers.
Manoeuvrability
Twin engined catamarans are incredibly manoeuvrable. Spinning in their own length they are easy to dock.
